The Designer's Dilemma: Friend or Foe in the Age of AI?

Imagine an RFP lands where you're asked to develop a comprehensive brand strategy, complete with a messaging framework, visual identity, and digital presence – all within a tight timeline and budget.
Five years ago, this would have meant choosing between thorough research and creative exploration.
Today? Our team leverages AI to conduct deeper market analysis, explore more strategic directions, and develop smarter creative solutions without blowing the budget or timeline.
The result isn't just faster delivery – it's more intelligent, strategic design work.
The creative industry stands at a crossroads.
AI tools are advancing rapidly, promising efficiency and endless possibilities, yet many agencies remain hesitant, viewing these technologies as threats rather than opportunities.
At BFJ Digital, we've chosen a different path – one that embraces innovation while championing the irreplaceable value of human creativity.
Is AI Really Taking Over Creative Work?
Not quite, and here's why.
While AI technology in 2025 has made remarkable strides, it's not at a level to replace human creativity entirely.
For quite some time now, the conversation about AI has revolved around it being a threat to craft – it's seen as an easy way out, a menace for photographers and illustrators, or a tool that undermines creative authorship.
This perspective misses the bigger picture.
AI excels at:
- Conducting rapid market research and competitive analysis
- Processing large datasets to inform strategic decisions
- Generating messaging frameworks and content variations
- Creating baseline design concepts and wireframes
- Optimising workflows and budget allocation
However, what AI cannot do is:
- Understand nuanced brand strategy and market positioning
- Navigate complex client relationships and business objectives
- Make intuitive, creative decisions based on cultural insights
- Deliver the emotional intelligence that drives truly impactful messaging
The reality is AI gives us a strong starting point, but designers add the final touch, ensuring the outcome aligns perfectly with the creative vision and the brand identity.
Here's an example of a client logo redesign from both our designers and AI.

Who do you think did it best?
How Are We Actually Using AI at BFJ Digital?
We've integrated AI strategically across our creative workflow, treating it as another powerful tool in our arsenal.
It's a tool that sits within the creative workflow, rather than overriding it.
Our approach focuses on maximising project value whilst maintaining creative integrity and strategic thinking.
Our AI-Enhanced Process
Strategic Research: AI accelerates our market research and competitor analysis, allowing us to identify opportunities and positioning strategies more efficiently whilst staying within budget constraints.
Messaging Development: We use AI to explore multiple messaging approaches and tone variations, helping us find the most compelling brand voice that resonates with target audiences.
Website Architecture & Planning: AI assists us in generating comprehensive sitemaps and wireframes based on client requirements and industry best practices, streamlining the planning phase whilst ensuring all essential user journeys are covered.

UI/UX Optimisation: AI tools help us generate best practice UI patterns and UX recommendations based on user research data and industry benchmarks, allowing our designers to focus on customisation and brand-specific refinements.
Creative Exploration: AI enables us to explore more creative territories within project timelines, experimenting with styles and approaches that inspire strategic design solutions.
Asset Creation: Our designers are evolving into skilled "prompt engineers," understanding that effective image generation requires a good prompt and a good prompt requires a thorough understanding of subject, craft and technique.
While writing this article, we wanted to create an image that captured the collaboration of BFJ Digital and AI tools, such as Gemini.
And it went a little something like this:
BFJ: Please create an abstract 3D render image of high fidelity spheres with studio lighting orbiting void space. Make the balls the following colours #FF7017 #B26EFF #00ECEE #3CC13B and the background colour of the scene #08082C
Gemini produced the following image:

BFJ: Heavily populate the scene with spheres as if in gravitational pull in space and remove the hex codes on the spheres
Gemini:

BFJ: Much better but leave negative space in the middle and the purple #B26EFF seems to be inaccurate
Gemini:

We decided to keep the above as a layer, prompting Gemini one last time.
BFJ: Almost perfect but can we populate with more spheres
Gemini:

Using the above image as the background layer, we then took to Photoshop to add in the Gemini icon to create the final result:

What do you think?
While Gemini's initial attempts weren't quite what we were looking for, our expert design team's guiding hand (or rather prompts) helped Gemini to meet the brief and align with BFJ Digital's branding.
It's true that AI can accelerate workflows, but it's really the human touch that enables the product to truly connect and communicate with audiences.
What About Authenticity in Design?
The authenticity debate has evolved beyond simple "real versus fake" distinctions.
When you think about it, most marketing imagery today is already so heavily photoshopped – can we still consider it "real"?
The question has shifted from whether something is artificially created to whether it effectively communicates the intended message and maintains brand integrity.
We don't see AI as a silver bullet, but a tool that requires our supervision, recognising that, like humans, it can be flawed and biased.
This is precisely why human oversight remains crucial in our creative process.
Our role as designers isn't diminished by AI; it's evolved to include:
- Strategic Direction: Ensuring AI-generated content aligns with brand objectives
- Quality Curation: Selecting and refining AI outputs that best serve the project
- Creative Refinement: Adding the human touch that transforms good into exceptional
- Brand Consistency: Maintaining visual identity across all AI-assisted work
Where Is This All Heading?
While there's a good chance that the rise of generative tools and the agility with which they can help designers achieve tasks will impact the way clients approach projects, we believe that craft and talent will remain visible and valued if we continue to champion and celebrate them.
The focus in the future will be on how we can use AI to achieve strategic outcomes that deliver better results for clients – whether that's conducting deeper market research within budget constraints, developing more sophisticated messaging frameworks, or creating comprehensive design systems more efficiently.
Our Vision for AI Integration
We are looking forward to the development of AI and hope that one day we can feed a client's brief into our agency's AI workflow and directly output accurate and reliable design results, to make project design more efficient and the resulting work more effective.
However, this technological advancement doesn't mean we're moving away from human creativity – we're creating a hybrid approach where AI handles ideation and iteration while our creative team focuses on the connection of strategy, refinement, and brand alignment.
